Having a naturally curly texture is awesome. Being able to wear different hairstyles that represent the Black African American culture is truly an honor. However, over the years, Black people have been told that curly or kinky is bad hair. But the truth is bad hair has nothing to do with the texture of your hair. Bad hair is hair that has not been properly cared for.

In the paragraphs below, I discuss some Natural hair care services that I provide. I’ve also listed some steps I take to complete the service, but I advise all my clients to understand how to care for their hair at home.

Deep Conditioning Treatment Mask

One of the natural hair treatments I use to prevent or fix damaged hair is a deep conditioning hair mask. Before applying the deep conditioning mask, I clean the hair with a damaged repair shampoo. After the hair is clean, I apply a conditioning mask to the hair and cover it with a plastic cap.

Once the hair is covered, I place my client under the dryer on low heat to medium heat for 15 mins. When the 15 mins are up and let the hair cool off before rinsing the conditioner out with cool water. Next, I use cool water to help close the hair cuticles that were opened from the heater.

The cuticles need to close to lock in the moisture from the deep conditioner. One of the last steps of the deep conditioning mask treatment is to apply a water-based and cream-based leave-in conditioner. The last step in this treatment is to apply a courier oil like castor oil to seal all the added moisture.

Protein Treatment

Another treatment that’s offered at Manely Hair Growth Salon is a protein treatment. Protein treatments are done to prevent or fix damaged hair. On processed hair like relaxed or colored hair, I will do a protein treatment to maintain healthy hair.

When the hair is colored, bleached, or relaxed, it loses protein. The reason I do protein treatments on processed hair is to replace the protein in the hair.

To apply the protein treatment, I clean the hair with a purifying shampoo for damaged hair. Once the hair is clean, the hair is sectioned, and the protein is applied and combed through. After the treatment is applied to the hair, the client is placed under the dry without a plastic cap.

For the treatment to work, the product has to completely dry. Once the product has dried, it is rinsed out. The issue with the protein treatment is that it is drying to the hair. Immediately after the protein treatment is rinsed out, a balancing moisturizer is applied. This time the hair is covered with a plastic cap, and the client goes back under the hairdryer for 15 mins.

Once the 15 mins are up, the balancing moisturizer is rinsed with cool water to close the cuticles. Just before blow-drying or the styling process begins, a water-based and cream-based leave-in conditioner is applied to the hair, as well as a courier oil like castor oil. I will comb through the product to make sure the products are evenly disrupted.

Hot Oil Treatments

Hot oil treatments are a classic way to offer moisture into the hair. This treatment is done by first choosing the oil or oils for the treatment. Each oil offers a different benefit, so choosing the correct oil is important. I like to mix up a few different oils for my hot oil treatments.

Once I have picked the oil I want to use, I clean the hair with a moisturizing shampoo. Next, I apply the oil to the hair, comb it through with a wide-tooth comb or Denman style hairbrush, and cover it with a plastic cap. After the oil is applied, my client goes under the dryer for 15 mins. Then I apply a moisturizing conditioner while the oil is still warm.

When the conditioner is applied with the oil, I recover the hair and put my client back under the dryer for 5 mins. Once the 5 mins are up, I’ll let the hair cool before rinsing out the conditioner and oil. The last step is to rinse out the conditioner and oil with cool water. Before styling the hair, a water-based, cream-based leave-in, and a courier oil like castor oil is applied to seal the hair.

Hair Trims

Another service I offer is hair trims to prevent split ends. When working with natural hair that is curly textured, split ends create tangles and knots. When a client tells me that their hair keeps getting tangled or I notice it while combing the hair, I suggest a trim. As a natural hair stylist in Jacksonville, Fl, a trim is less than 1 inch of hair.

My process for a hair trim is to clean and condition the hair. Next, I apply a water-based, cream-based leave-in conditioner and a courier oil like castor oil to seal the cuticles. Then, I apply a heat protectant to blow-dry the hair with a handheld blow-dryer.

Sometimes I will trim the hair after blow-drying it with a pair of sharp hair shears. However, if the client flat iron their hair I flat iron the hair for the trim. I don’t flat iron everyone’s hair because some clients don’t like to apply so much heat to their hair.
